Message to our Mayor and City Council

To: The Mayor and City Council for the City of Chateauguay
Let me introduce myself. My name is Nelson Cabral, current acting President for the Chateauguay Soccer Association and citizen of our municipality for 10 years. I am writing in the name of the residents and members of the Chateauguay Soccer Association. As the the largest sports Association in our city, we provide a community service for 1,400 children and their parents. Our number one objective has been to provide a top quality program at an affordable price to our community. A task that is often rendered more difficult because of the rising cost of equipment, location rentals and city regulations. As you may be aware on June 8th the Health Ministry of Quebec, announced that athletic associations could once again begin sports activities providing they could ensure all safety & sanitary protocols could be respected.
Association board members and volunteers went immediately to work. Planning for the eventual return which was yet to be communicated by Soccer Quebec. Since timing was critical, we immediately engaged our municipal colleagues at Sport & Loisir in order to secure their help in acquiring fields and necessary installation equipment, which would help us ensure the safety measures were adhered to. After 3 weeks, of emails and phone calls, I was disappointed to find out that we would get no aid, other than the fields would be provided and that a tent would be set up. It is inconceivable to me as a citizen of our city that it took 3 weeks to provide such a response.
I am disheartened and disappointed by the lack of support that this council has provided our association. Financial aid which was agreed upon in 2019 is still outstanding. Support and services which should be at the heart of every community has been a constant battle for us. Its been 3 years that we have asked for a sit down with the city council and you Mr. Mayor, in the hopes of building bridges that would ensure the growth of our sport while defining the municipal requirements for all our citizens who use our services.
Today culminates the struggle to get your support and those of the council, who are elected by the people, to represent their needs and services. We didn’t ask for a 1.8 million dollar installation to house us, nor did we ask for $20,000 in funding for our activities. We asked for metal barriers, yellow barrier tape, cones and posters to help direct our players on and off the field. As a citizen of this city, I expected this was something our city could have, and should have provided easily.
So now I turn to the people of our city of Chateauguay. We the members of the board, employees and volunteers have made every effort to acquire and provide all the required elements to deliver our sports program. With only the funding delivered through registrations we will attempt everything in our power to deliver the best and safest program. However make no mistake, if our municipality does not provide the required safety installation in our parks we will be forced to cancel our recreational (House League) season. Which will impact 800 kids and their parents.
This isn’t an idle threat. It is a plea for your aid and support. We need you to call up your municipal councilor and request that this issue be put forth and handled in a timely manner. My voice has fallen on deaf ears. Now its time to collectively put your tax dollars to services and programs that you want.
You can reach your municipal councilor here on this page, where you will find their email and mobile phone number.
Finally to our Mayor, I have tried numerous times to reach you, including today and as is so often the case your secretary simply took my number as she done so many times before. If we are the ensure that the needs of our community is met, it will take everyone working together in the same direction. That direction is set from the top.
Thank you in advance,
President Association Soccer Chateaugay.
